Abstract

Sulbactam inhibits many of the beta-lactamases commonly found to be the cause of penicillin derivatives resistance. This agent was combined with ampicillin in the treatment of 21 patients admitted with the lower respiratory tract infections. Seventeen patients were included because they had ampicillin resistant pathogenic organisms. The overall clinical results showed 90% of the infections to be either cured or improved. Three patients showed transitory increases of SGOT or alkaline phosphatase value in liver function tests, and one patients experienced drug fever. This therapeutic regimen of sulbactamlampicillin appeared relatively safe and efficatious in the treatment of the lower respiratory tract infections 7d by ampicillin-resistant organisms.
